📖 History of the Tower

The tower was part of the walled enclosure which enclosed the medieval town of Llanes. Its function was defensive and for surveillance, and over the centuries it had other uses: it even served as cárcel.

Originally it had three plants and it was topped by a crenellated terraceAccess was not at ground level, but through a opening on the first floor protected by a barbican, a common defensive resource at the time: with the high entrance, the tower was much more difficult to assault.

For years the Torreón housed the tourist office from Llanes. Today the office is located in the old market, on Marqués de Canillejas street, next to the port.
