Basilica of Santa María del Concejo

La Basilica of Santa María del Concejo is the main religious temple of the town of Llanes and one of the best examples of Gothic in Asturias. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries, stands out for its imposing presence in full historic helmet, surrounded by cobbled streets and stately buildings. Its architecture mix the Gothic style with Romanesque elements, which reflects the long process of its construction and the different artistic movements that influenced the fishing village.

📖 History and curiosities

La Basilica of Saint Mary of the Assumption, Also known as Basilica of Santa María del Concejo, is one of the few examples of the Gothic in AsturiasIts construction was promoted by the residents of Llanes themselves, with the works beginning around year 1240 y extending into the 14th or 15th century In 1973, the temple was raised to rank of Minor Basilica.

Architecturally, it presents a basilica plan with three naves and three apses, covered by ribbed vaults (in the side aisles) and a star-shaped vault in the central naveOne of its most distinctive elements is its two entrance doors: the entrance occidental, older, looks seven archivolts with sculpted capitals with human and animal motifs, while the entrance on is protected by a classicist portico from 1610 and shows five archivolts decorated with zoomorphic, anthropomorphic and plant motifs.

Inside, the highlights are the Plateresque main altarpiece, attributed to the goldsmith León Picardo in 1517, one of the most brilliant and early examples of this style in Asturias. Also outstanding is the Funerary chapel of the Holy Trinity or of Juan Parientea Mannerist altarpiece from the late 16th century. The Chapel of the Virgin of the Rosary, baroque style, and an 18th-century statue of Saint Rita complete the decorative richness of the interior..

The construction reflects an aesthetic transition: Although the dominant style is Gothic, it retains elements of Romanesque tradition.
